Formerly, the citizens of Castelo de Vide lived within the sturdy walls of the castle. Nowadays, there is a small inland village where the Igreja da Nossa Senhora da Alegria Church is (17th century).
From the castle, it is possible to enjoy wonderful views over the city and its vicinity. It was built by King Dinis and his brother D. Afonso between 1280 and 1365. On top of it there is a 12-metre round turret.
Inside the castle is the Megalithic Interpretation Centre, with extensive information panels explaining the history and characteristics of the megaliths in this area of Alentejo. In the upper room is located the Museum of Military History and Architecture with a chronological presentation of the kings living in the castle between the 12th and 19th centuries. This museum also displays some muskets, cannonballs and stone tools.
