The Sinagoga (Synagogue) of Castelo de Vide is located in the old Jewish quarter of the city, next to the Castle.
The Jewish quarter reached its zenith in the 15th century, after the expulsion of Jews from Spain. Nowadays, the synagogue has been transformed into a museum, being the main memory of that time.
The museum includes the original two-rooms synagogue, one for men and one for women. Also, there are a wooden tabernacle and a sacred chest where the Torah scrolls are kept.
Other rooms display a magnificent collection of pieces about the history of Jewish communities in Castelo de Vide.
It is noteworthy that Manuel I issued in 1496 an edict forcing Jews to convert or leave the country. Many of them returned to Spain, others moved to the neighbouring city of Évora.
