The Igreja de Santa María do Castelo Church of Tavira is a religious Medieval building (12th and 13th centuries) that had to be refurbished after the 1755 earthquake, even though its original Gothic structure, vestibule and some Gothic chapels have been preserved.
It also exhibits tiles panels, reredos and imagery in the sacristy and its three naves. In here stands out the 7 knights of the Order of Santiago tomb (Túmulo dos sete Cavaleiros da Ordem de Santiago), located in the main chapel. The legend goes that the knights were murdered in cold blood during a Moorish ambush, what meant the conquest of the city as a revenge.
