The Nossa Senhora da Piedade Sanctuary belongs to the Orden del Cister Monastery and has preservation problems after the extinction of the religious order in Portugal. It has suffered partial destructions, earthquakes, and other historic misfortunes. This monumental old convent was probably one of the most important ones in the region of Algarve during the 16th century.
It was the largest building of its kind in Algarve and the only one from the Order of Cister in the south of Portugal. Built in the 16th century commanded by D. Manuel I in gratitude for the raising of a wall in Arzila, its construction finished two decades later, after providing the building with its unique Manueline style.
The Order of Cister was extinguished in 1862 and the convent sold at public auction, when it was transformed into a flour factory. It has recently undergone some alteration works.
