Lagoa das Furnas is a lake located in the town of Furnas, in the district of Povoação, in São Miguel island, Azores.
The lake, at 600 metres, is surrounded by lush macaronesian vegetation, with many volcanic evidences such as fumaroles and “Caldeiras” of boiling water. In the borders of the lake, many people still do the traditional “Cozidos à Portuguesa” (Portuguese Cassolettes) under the surface of the ground thanks to such volcanism.
In one of the sides of the lake, you can also find the Capela de Nossa Senhora das Vitórias, Neo-Gothic in style, and nowadays used as mausoleum for José do Canto and his wife. It is considered one of Portugal’s most interesting chapels. Just south of the lake, there is the CMIF, Monitoring and Research Centre of Furnas, whose aim is to develop and disseminate the ecological recovery actions regarding water quality and the ecosystems in Lagoa das Furnas.
The CMIF also features a welcoming area for visitors, where they offer information on their goals and projects, a truly interesting place to discover more about the lake and its system. The CMIF also houses a small bar and shop. Among other, they do have several exhibits that will allow to travel through the heritage of Furnas valley and the lake through interactive devices and accessible resources. In the auditorium you can get to what a documentary on the valley, the lake, and the recovery project.
