Jardim Botânico Terra Nostra (Terra Nostra Botanical Garden) is located in the Furnas Valley, in São Miguel Island, Azores. This garden features great diversity of plants and exotic trees, springs, and a iron-load water pool.
The park was listed as one of the best 12 of the world.
It currently extends over twelve hectares of land, and features thousands of trees and plants from around the world.
Different collections can be seen here, even the largest collection of camellias worldwide, with more than 600 genres. The collection of autochthonous ornamental plants, nenufar collection, and the arboretum - which contains thousands of trees from around the world - are also worth seeing. In the garden there is a thermal pool with warm waters, very rich in mineral, that create a yellowish hue; as well as healing mud.
The park can be covered in two hours, not including any bathing in the pool. Both the park and manor were established in the 18th century by Thomas Hickling, Consul of the US to the area. He ordered the building of the park and house for his summer retreats. Thus, the area was once known as “Yankee Hall.”
The garden did not develop until the 19th century. It was then that, after being purchased by the Viscount of Praia, the water garden and grove tree boulevard, as well as flower areas. Yankee Hall was substituted by the current Casa do Parque, that currently houses the “Terra Nostra Garden Hotel”, perfectly integrated in the park, and offers a quiet environment, in direct contact with nature. When the park was inherited by the Second Viscount of Praia, it also suffered many improvements and reforms, since it was re-designed with the support of Portuguese and English specialists, who reformed the channel, grots, and bush avenues.
