The fortified Mértola Castle excels over the parish church of this fascinating Medieval villages of the region of Alentejo.
Its building dates back to the 13th century. The city was built over an Arabic enclosure, the alcáçova (citadel), which at the same time rests over a Roman forum.
This castle was considered for the centuries to be one of the most impregnable fortresses in the Occidental Iberia.
Currently, in the keep (torre de menagem), there is a nice museum that exhibits a collection of architectural material dating back between the 6th and 10th centuries B.C.
From its prominent keep and its walls you will have the chance to observe the impressive panoramic views of Mértola’s old town and the Guadiana River.
