The Parque Natural do Vale do Guadiana (Vale do Guadiana Natural Park) was created in 1995 to protect the Guadiana River, one of the largest and most important rivers in Portugal and its vicinity.
This nature park is set deep between the cities of Serpa and Mértola, in the Portuguese region of Alentejo. It has hills, plains, and deep valleys with a rich variety of flora and fauna. It also hosts several endangered or lacking species, like the Black Stork, the Lesser Kestrel, the Eagle Owl, the Black-winged Kite, the Horned Viper and the Iberian Toad.
In the park you will also find numerous Prehistoric remains and a great variety of hiking routes.
