The Capitães Generais Palace was ordered to be built by D. Sebastião in 1575 for the company of Jesus, in the historical centre of Angra do Heroísmo, capital city of the Terceira Island, Azores, Portugal.
This elegant palace was part of an architectonic compound, from which today are just preserved two buildings, the palace and the church, since the Colégio dos Estudos School was demolished in 1940 to give rise to the Largo do Colégio Square.
In 1766, and after being extinct by the Society of Jesus in 1759, this building started to work as residence of governors and general captains of the island; it was also headquarters of the Portugal Realm Regency, turned into a royal palace by D. Pedro IV. In 1901 it welcomed the kings D. Carlos and D. Amélia.
Along the last century has also been used for different purposes, such as governor’s residence, or General Government Residence.
During 1980 the building was seriously damaged, therefore it was rebuilt to host the Education and Culture Regional Secretary. It is currently used as museum and headquarters of Public Administration and Regional Organisation Direction.
The museum exhibits, along numerous rooms and a chapel, various painting samples, mainly royal and governor’s portraits, sculptures, aged furniture; and decorative 18th and 19th century arts.
