São Mateus da Calheta is the most maritime city of Terceira Island, Azores, and obviously offers the best fish and seafood dishes, freshly landed to its port.
The São Mateus port was defended by the 16th century Grande Fort, which nowadays is painted in yellow, and together with the fishing activity and the terraces, forms a picturesque lively dock.
From the port, after crossing a couple of streets, you will arrive to the omnipresent church raising above the white walls and roofs of the city. This church stands out because of its facade with two twin towers, built in 1895 and 1911, with whitewashed conical auctions. The sailors votive offerings are offered up to the Patron Saint and the Virgin, two 17th century Baroque carvings.
On its vicinity is located the Quinta do Martelo, an authentic gastronomic and cultural sanctuary; and the neighbour city of Serreta, which offers good samples of popular architecture, as well as a dense forestal park.
On the other side of the Ponta de São Mateus Point is located in Porto Negrito, a small pier which takes advantage of the lava formations, which there are also a natural pools. In the fort area you will find a viewpoint with some the iron pots, where the cetaceans fat was melted during whaling times.
