Praia da Vitória is a city located in the Terceira Island, Azores. From it stand out its old town and its promenade.
The heart of the old town is located in the Praça Francisco Ornelas da Càmara Square, where you will find the allegorical monument to the Victory against the absolutists, made by Abraham Abohobot in 1929; and the 17th century Paços do Concelho Palace, which shows an attractive facade typical from Azores and a central staircase with a double ramp and a squared bell tower.
In this square begins the Rua do Jesus street, a peculiar pedestrian and commercial street ornamented with pictures of houses with doors, knockers, windows, roof and chimneys, decorating its pavement; in the final stretch of the street you will find a beautiful garden and the municipal market, both from the 19th century.
A little bit upper is located the Igreja e Santa Cruz Mother Church, a temple refurbished in the 19th century with lots of Gothic-Renaissance elements.
Not far from the previous temple you can visit the Igreja da Misericórdia Church, with exhibitions of the Flemish school and 16th century imagery panel paintings of. Beside the Rua da Misericórdia Street is located the Museu Casa Vitorino Nemésio House Museum, dedicated to one of the most important contemporary writers.
On the modern and lively promenade is located the Miradouro do Facho Viewpoint, from where you will enjoy excellent views over the port and the city, at which back is the Paúl Lagoons, where birds that cross the Atlantic Ocean breed. Among them you will find a great amount of ducks coming from Canada.
On the opposite side of the Facho is located the Praia Bay, where you will find three excellent pools: Prainha, Praia Grande and Praia dos Sargento, awarded with Blue Flag and accessible for people with reduced mobility.
A good day to visit the city is the 11th August, since it is when the greatest town festivities are celebrated. In this festivities take place the Touradas à Corda in the beach, fireworks, marquees, troupes, ethnographic procession, etc.
