The fortress of Arrifana was erected in the year 1635, during the reign of Filipe II to defend fishermen from attacks in the area of Aljezur, in Algarve. This fortification is the only ribat (Arabic small fortification) existing in Portugal, being the second one in the Iberian Peninsula, after the Ribat de Guardamar, in Alicante, Spain.
In the year 1670 this ribat was rebuilt; but in 1755 it was seriously damaged by the Lisbon earthquake.
Nowadays, the place forms a natural viewpoint from where wonderful panoramic views over the Vicentina Coast can be contemplated.
