The Aljezur Castle was erected by the Arabs in the 10th century and taken from the Moors during the 13th century. During a long time, the castle allowed to control the river port, which established communication with the sea and worked as a defense for the population against the constant attacks from enemies.
Even though it is in poor condition, nowadays it still keeps its walls from the 14th century and two towers from where you will enjoy of great panoramic views over Aljezur, the area of the Igreja Nova church and the Valle D. Sancho valley, where rice is cultivated.
