The Shrine of Nossa Senhora do Carmo is located outside the city walls of Óbidos, towards the west.
The origins of this shrine is unknown, although it is believed it already was a Roman temple devoted to Jupiter, since several headstones with inscriptions were found here.
This temple was see of the Parish of São João Baptista up to 1636, and since then it was consecrated to Nossa Senhora do Carmo.
Its structure was badly damaged by the 1755 earthquake, and its contemporary image is product of several restoration works during the XX century.
The old image of the saint patron São João Baptista (Saint John the Baptist) is a valuable sculpture dating back to the XV century, today exhibited in the Museu Municipal de Óbidos museum.
In the exterior, a medieval bell-tower was built.
