The church of São Tiago, located inside the walls of the town of Óbidos, next to the entrance to the castle, is a baroque and neoclassic temple built in 1186 following orders of D. Sancho, and later rebuilt after succumbing to the 1755 earthquake.
It originally featured three naves, with a main entrance to the east, so directly connected to the inside of the castle. This church was for the sole use of the Royal family on their stays in Óbidos, being enriched throughout the centuries with plenty of artworks, among them the Galeria da Rainha, of gothic style.
The church was totally destroyed in the 1755 earthquake, so it had to be rebuilt in 1772, aligning its façade with Rua Direita. The main altar features a tableaux representing São Tiago Maior, dated around the second half of the XVI, of unknown author. Currently, that work is exhibited in the Museu Municipal de Óbidos.
