The Miróbiga Roman site is located in a promontory just north of the city of Santiago do Cacém, in the region of Alentejo, Portugal.
They are the remains of a Lusitan settlement (around the 5th century b.C), although the current remains date back to Roman times (between Ist and 4th century a.D).
The site features remains from the forum or central market, some houses of businessmen and artisans, lodgings with remnants of the original painting, and an important set of baths, excellently preserved, that are divided in two areas: the most luxurious one, with remains of marble, mosaics, and sculpted columns; and a much smaller and humbler one.
Both areas of the baths are open to the visitors, who can see the cold pools (frigidarium), hot areas (caldarium), changing rooms, public restrooms (latrinas) and heating room. The hot-water distribution system known was “hipocausto” is also visible and consisted of narrow galleries over brick arches, similar to the system used in many country houses nowadays known as “gloria.”
Just one kilometer away, remains from a racecourse were seen, where supposedly the famed Lusitan horses ran.
