The Santiago do Cacém castle was built by the moors and was permanently conquered and reconquered between the Moors and Christians during the age of the Reconquista. This ended in 1217, when it was finally taken by the Templar Knights and the Order of Santiago de la Espada, being the latter the ones who eventually controlled it.
The castle features a double walled area creating a nice walking area between the heavy walls of stone.
The internal line of the castle is fortified by ten turrets that now grant excellent views of the city and the Sines Cape.
The bailey is nowadays the city cemetery. Next to the gate, stands the Iglesia de São Tiago church.
