Discover Almagreira, in Santa María Island, Azores, Portugal

Almagreira is a Portuguese population located in the area of Vila do Porto, in the South of the Santa María Island, Azores, Portugal.

According to tradition the houses of this city are painted in white, with dark red lines, which are supposed to remind the ochre colour.

Among the built heritage of this population there should be emphasized the Prainha Fort, the Ermita de Nossa Senhora dos Remedios Shrine, the Ermita de Santa Rita Shrine, the Ermita de Nossa Senhora dos Remedios Shrine, the Baixa do Vigário Fort, the São João Baptista de Praia Formosa Fort, and the Igreja de Nossa Senhora de Bom Despacho Church.

Regarding the natural heritage, it turns out especially interesting the Furna Velha, Figueiras Grotto, Figueiral Grotto, Praia Formosa Beach, with has a large sandy area considered to be one of the best bathing areas of the island; and the Bahía da Praia Nature Reserve.
