São Lourenço is doubtlessly one of the most beautiful cities in Santa María Island, Azores. Its beauty comes especially from the natural harmony of its bay, adorned with a small island, in pairing with the small white houses and vineyards terraces.
On the road to Santo Espírito by Azenhas de Cima, you will find the Miradouro de São Lournço Viewpoint, where it is recommended to stop for a while and enjoy the calm of its wonderful views. The overlook has a turret from where to admire the stepped vineyards landscape. The vineyards are demarcated with stone fences. There also is a coastal shelf covered by the native forest, the houses and the Ilhéu do Romeiro (Romeiro Islander) with its arch, where the boats pass through, and the beach.
This village hosting a short promenade shows up houses painted in white and blue, because this is the colour of the Santa Bárbara parish.
Nearby the wharf you will find a wonderful natural pool which has been awarded with a Blue Flag.
Another interesting place to visit is the 18th century chapel of Jesus, María and José, where it is worth to see the tiles mosaics.
It is important to know that on August 16th each year this city hosts the Folklore International Festival, as well as a Cuisine Fair.
In the vicinity of São Lourenço is located Santa Bárbara, a small town of white and blue houses organised around a church. This town is the closest one to the famous Pico Alto Peak, the highest point of Santa María Island (587 metres).
It is possible to do a 13-kilometres trip leaving from the peak that finishes in the Cré Bay, nearby the cities of Anjos and São Pedro.
