The Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Assunção Mother Church, located in Vila do Porto, capital city of the Santa María Island, is one of the oldest religious temples in the Azores.
The current temple, with some changes made during the 18th century, dates back to the end of the 15th or beginning of the 16th century.
It interior is divided into three naves separated by arches suspended on top of red stone columns.
Currently, just the Gothic side door and a Manueline ceiling in the Santa Catarina Chapel are preserved.
Its interior houses 18th century Baroque carving altars, as well as some 16th century Flemish images, standing out the Nossa Senhora with the Child Jesus.
The festivities of its patron saint are celebrated yearly on August 15th, with a mass and a procession.
In front of the church there is a19th century fountain.
