The Museu de Santa Maria (Santa María Museum), with an ethnographic and parish character, is located in the city of Santo Espírito in Santa María Island, Azores. It is a very useful place to discover professions and ways of life that have already disappeared.
This museum was opened in 1972 at the initiative of P. José María do Amaral, but reinaugurated in 1996.
Its rooms are distributed along two old communicated dwellings that have been excellently decorated in the style of a traditional islander house.
On its interior hosts a ceramic collection coming from Lagoa, Terceira Island and abroad; just as sections dedicated to farming, the island’s pottery workshops, elaborated with the best mud of the Azores, because they had lead; and textile, as well as everyday life in the 19th and 20th century.
