Maia, along with São Lourenço, is one of the worthy places to visit in Santa María Island, Azores. This beautiful and quiet city is spreaded out at the feet of cliffs located between Ponta do Castelo Peak, with the Gonçalo Viewpoint and the whaling factory ruins, and Ponta do Castelete Peak.
All the houses in this city are painted in white, and have their doors, windows and corners in green.
This city, set deep between the sea and the mountains, shows a steep slope with a beautiful landscape of farmyards and vineyards. The vines of the Vinho do Cheiro reach almost to the sea, creating an incredible panoramic view.
On the plain are located most of the dwellings, some of which share their spaces with the vineyard.
Next to the city you will find the Miradouro da Vigia da Baleia Viewpoint, from where you will enjoy fantastic views.
This city can also brag about housing a wonderful natural pool, awarded with the Blue Flag due to the quality of its waters.
Towards the Ponta do Castelete Cliffs, not far from the Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres Chapel located in Calheta, you will find a beautiful horsetail waterfall known as Queda d’agua de Aveiro, with a fall in three parts of around 300 metres. This along with the cactus and vineyards make up a unique landscape.
