Santa Catarina de Ribamar Fortress is located over Rocha Beach, one of the most famous and beautiful beaches in Portugal.
Its construction was commanded by D. João de Castro, during the XVI c., in order to avoid pirates and invaders to go up the Arade River and invade Portimão. The fortress is currently among the best ones in Algarve.
It has a rectangular floor, with a tower in each corner. It is settled in front of São João
de Ferragudo Fortress.
Nowadays, a cafeteria inside the fortress has live performances. Even if it is just want to look at the wonderful views of the Santa Catarina Overlook, located on its inside, or to visit the little Santa Catarina de Alexandría, the visit is totally worthy.
