The Castelo de Evoramonte Castle is a fortification of Italian taste with a beautiful keep which is located in the little fortified village of Evoramonte, in Estremoz, Alto Alentejo, Portugal.
This castle was built in 1306 and there settled down several civilizations: the Romans, Moors, and, then, modified after the 1531 earthquake.
It currently has the aspect of a Gothic fortress, despite the transformations it went through during the 16th century. Its shape is tightened by tied ropes in the centre of the facades. This knots were chosen as symbols of the Bragança House, whose insignia was “Depois vós, nós”, which means “After you, us”.
The interior, neatly restored, counts with thick columns and a sinuous vaulted roof on each of its floors.
On the outside, there are stone sculptures which represent the idea of faithfulness, symbols of the Bragança family.
