The Igreja de Santiago church, or Igreja Matriz de Estômbar, is the only registered National Monument in Lagoa. It was built around the middle of the XVI century and is currently one of the most representative examples of manueline architecture to be found in Algarve.
The church was built on top of an old shrine devoted to Santa Ana and features influences from several styles due to the rebuildings after the 1755 earthquake.
It’s façade is decorated with plant and flower icons.
Inside it’s worth noting the two manueline columns, sculpted with figures belonging to all social classes, and a parade of musicians. The main chapel features a reredos with gilded sculptures where the images of Santiago and San José can be found.
Largo da Igreja, Estômbar, Lagoa (Algarve).
The temple is open only when ceremonies are held.
Summer: Saturday at 19:00 and Sunday at 12:00.
Winter: Sunday at 12:00.
