The Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Luz church, Igreja Matriz of Lagoa (main church), was built in the XVI century, but only the manueline portal of the siren tower remains from the original building. The current temple dates back to the late XVIII century and early XIX century, and features a façade with neoclassic elements.
Inside, it’s worth noting the reredos in the major altar, with an image of the Virgin, from the XVIII century. It boasts an excellent artistic quality, believed to have been made by Machado de Castro, who also produced the image of São Sebastião.
In the sacristy, you will also find magnificent Brazilian-wood furniture, as well as several ornamentation pieces of great value and archeological remains from the manueline building.
