The Nossa Senhora da Rocha fortress (Fortaleza de Nossa Senhora da Rocha), also known as Porches Castle, stands on the top of an exceptionally-beautiful promontory dominating the coast of Lagoa, Algarve.
This fortress was used to protect the population from the constant attack of pirates, until it was badly damaged in the 1755 earthquake.
The chapel, which was surrounded by the fortress, still stands and houses inside a valuable image of the Virgin and Jesus dating back to the XVI century.
It is currently registered as “Inmueble de Interés Público” (Construction of Public interest).
