It was the Society of Jesus who built, in 1603, the building where the theatre is today. The building, then a school, was fully functional until the order was expelled from Portugal in 1759, when the building was abandoned.
It was not until 1843, after Liberalism was established in Portugal, that Dr. Lázado Doglioni acquired the building. His nephew, Dr. Justino Cúmano directed several modifications in the building to convert it into a theatre, which was eventually inaugurated in 1855.
Nowadays, the theatre hosts several shows and different events year-round.
