Within the old Jewish Ghetto, the Museu Municipal de Faro (Faro Municipal Museum), formerly known as Archaeological Museum, is installed in the Nossa Senhora da Asunção Convent, a splendid Renaissance domed building dating back to the 16th century.
Among the many pieces in exhibition, it’s worth seeing the Mosaico del Océano (Mosaic of the Ocean) dated around the 3rd century, and only unearthed in 1976 in a worksite. The museum also exhibits a wide range of Arab home-instruments from the 9th to the 11th centuries; a series of artworks focused around Faro’s legends by painter Carlos Filipe Porfírio; the artworks by Ferreira d’Almeida; and the collection entitled “Caminos del Algarve Romano” (Roman Trails of Algarve).
