The first windmills (moinhos) were erected by the Knights Templar during the 12th and 13th centuries. The Wineries (lagares) of El Rei were expanded in the 16th century by king D. Manuel I, giving them their name. This buildings are located in the north of Tomar, in Portugal.
In 1834, after the dissolution of the Religious Orders, the mills were sold in several occasions, yet always retaining their original characteristics.
