The São Francisco Convent is part of an architectural complex in manierist style dating back to the 17th century.
The convent boasts two cloisters, one of which houses the Museu dos Fósforos (Match Museum).
The temple is characterized by its Chã-style architecture. It’s façade is a great example of manierist style in the entrance and frontispice.
The interior is conformed of a nave of great height and a barrel vault. Also worth noting are the unique sculptures of the Calvary and four images of the Virgin Mary. In the first chapel on the side of the Gospel you will find an image of Saint Iria, patron saint of the city of Tomar.
The collection of this museum was donated in the year 1980 by Aquiles de Mota Lima. Currently,it owns more than 80,000 objects, boxes, posters, and labels of matches, composing a curious way of representing world history.
It’s one of Europe’s largest collection of matches, and allows you to learn a lot about the appearance and production of matches in Portugal, from the first ones to the contemporary.
