Tomar is the perfect relaxed spot to go for a quiet stroll. The best spots are in the tree-surrounded are nearby the walls, such as the amazing Jardins da Mata Nacional dos Sete Montes. The historical city centre or the magnificent riverside park, with many swans, herons, and ducks, are also ideal settings.
If you want to explore the city walking, a good idea would be to begin in the very Praça da República square, in the very heart of Tomar. There, you can visit the Igreja de São João Baptista, a renowed example of Gothic architecture, with an interesting interior and free admission. Afterwards, towards the left, you will find the Rua Dr. Joaquim Jacinto street, where you will be able to see the Sinagoga de Tomar and the Museu Luso-Hebraico Abraão Zacuto, also with free admission. A little further in the same street, lies the Casa Memória Lopes-Graça, a museum about the Portuguese compositor in his very birth home.
If you follow the street to the end, and the turn right, you will be walking towards Praça Redol, known for its monuments Estatus and by the Casa dos Cubos. Our tour goes on to the north, crossing the river through the Flecheiro bridge and along the Rua de Santa Iria until you reach the Santa Iria Convent, an interesting 16th century temple, just next to the old bridge of the city. The, cross the river again to visit the Contemporary Art Museum (Núcleo de Arte Comtemporânea), which exhibits many relevant contemporary artworks by Portuguese artists.
Another additional route starts in the Sete Montes National Forest, an idyllic and quiet location to relax while walking in its beautiful gardens. Afterwards, climb up to the Castelo dos Templários (Castle of the Knights Templar) in Tomar, where you will also be able to visit the Convento de Cristo (Convent of Christ) and, then, keep going north to visit the Capela de Nossa Senhora da Conceição Shrine, in the Largo do Pelourinho street, and, at last, the Capela de São Gregório Chapel.
