The Alqueva Lake is the largest manmade lake in Europe. It boasts 250 square kilometres of surface, 83 km of length and 1100 km of coast, with almost 200 of them belonging to the municipality of Reguengos de Monsaraz.
Alqueva allows the practice of many water sports and memorable boat trips between the many islets and charming hideaways. The lake is a strategic reserve of water that allows the distribution of freshwater to almost 200,000 people.
It also includes a watering global system benefitting more than 100,000 hectares of irrigated land, including the areas of Extremadura, in Spain. The biggest hydroelectric power station in Portugal is also here.
