The Casa Museu Bissaya Barreto is set up in the former residence of the Coímbra teacher Bissaya-Barreto (1886-1974), surgeon, deputy, and Salazar’s friend.
This Neo-Baroque building was built up in 1925, and is surrounded by a Romantic garden decorated with statues and tiles. It currently preserves its original decoration.
Its inside reveals the aesthetics tastes of its former owner: a French 20th century salon, Portuguese tiles of different ages, roofs with spectacular frescos, chinas from the East India Company and Saxony, silver, Italian marbles, a collections of paintings of the Mother and the Child, different fabrics of José Malhoa, Sousa Pinto and António Vitorino, and a library with books from the 16th and 17th century.
