The Mata Nacional do Buçaco Forest is an excellent 105 hectares national park located in the hillside of the Serra do Buçaco Mountains, within the Coímbra District, in Portugal.
This national park hosts an amazing variety of 700 flora species, among which you will find from big Mexican cedars to ferns as big as trees. This place has inspired numerous writers, who have written about the place’s mixture of spiritual and natural beauty.
The forest is surrounded by high stone walls, providing a more exotic and mysterious atmosphere. In the middle raises the 1907 Royal Palace, with an extravagant Neo-Manueline fairytale facade, and currently hosting the Palace Hotel do Buçaco.
This aromatic forest has numerous routes, hermitages in ruins, ponds and exotic trees. This is why it is an ideal place to practise hiking. The most famous routes are the ones going to the Fetos Valley, to the Fria Fountains, where swans swim at the feet of a great stairway.
On the outside is located the village of Luso, which waters are considered to be balsamic and able to cure from gout to the soul. The village hosts numerous guesthouses where you can stay to visit the forest and the spa. However, if you can afford it, do not hesitate to stay in the Palace Hotel do Bussaco, in the middle of the forest.
