The Science Museum (Museu da Ciência) of the University of Coímbra is an interactive space which aim is to teach science for all publics and all ages.
This museum has won different awards and prizes for the best education service and the best management multimedia system, which recognise the quality of its educativa activities and integration with the public.
On its inside it hosts physics, zoology, mineralogy geology, and botanic galleries:
Physics Gallery:
The Physics Gallery, besides the Chemical Lab, counts with a cabinet of Physics from the 18th century which can be visited. Its collections is one of the most important worldwide.
Geology and Mineralogy Gallery:
It is one of the oldest galleries of its kind in the whole continent. This gallery contains more than 5,600 specimens.
The section of the Natural History Museum is found right next to the Zoology one. This centres is made up by a group of exposition areas among which stand out the José Bonifacia d’Andrade e Silva Gallery, where minerals from all around the world are shown, as well as a collection of 800 specimens, even some precious stones organized according to the Strunz and Dana classification.
The section of geological cartography, named Paul Choffat Room, exhibits different types of scales of cartographic representations of the national territory. Among those, stand out the maps in relief of the 19th and 20th centuries, and the support equipments to the geological cartography.
Zoology Gallery:
This gallery has rich and varied collections encompassing species from almost all the zoological groups. This museological centres was founded in the 18th century and it is linked to the creation of the Philosophy Faculty.
Botanic Gallery:
It counts with diversified archives among which stand out plenty of vegetal species, didactic models of the diversity of shapes and structures of plants, devices, fossils and scientific instruments.
