Espaço Protegido de Roca da Pena (Roca da Pena Natural Site) is made up by a calcareous relief with abrupt scarps. It is 479 metres high above sea-level, becoming an excellent natural viewpoint with views to the sea.
However, the main interest of Roca da Pena lies in its archaeological and natural heritage. It’s grottoes and the double stonewall evidence human presence since the Neolithic until the Moorish occupation of the place.
With some Portuguese endemic species, vegetation and fauna are valuable since groups of Boneli eagles and royal owls live here, as well as bats, foxes, and mongooses.
It is also worth noting the presence of ancient windmills, and the charming nearby village of Penina.
