The trail to Praia do Loulé Velho beach covers a rural valley where ancient hydraulic machinery can be seen, such as aqueducts and water wheels, as well as centuries-old trees, surrounded by interesting magpies and hoopoes.
Formerly known as Praia do Trafal, the eastern area of the beach shows dunes and a wide sandy area. The western one has a more narrow sandy area and some reddish rocky formation. Here, when the sand is moved by the sea it is possible to see remains from a salting factory dating back to the roman period. As well as the mud of an ancient lake system and remains from a time where the sea line was much lower. There are even underwater remains of a Carthaginian city!
