Aljustrel is a town located 34 kilometres to the Southwest of the city of Beja, in Alentejo, Portugal.
This place was inhabited by the Romans and was known as Vipasca. Even during that time, its pyrite deposits were exploited. These deposits still give a remarkable sailor-ish character to the city.
Some of the places worth the visit in Aljustrel are: the Igreja Matriz Church, decorated with gorgeous tiles panels; the Igreja de Misericórdia Church (16th c.), the Ermita de Nossa Senhora do Castelo Shrine, with its Gothic style and located on the top of the hill over the ruins of the castle.
In this town there is a fascinating route known as “Rota do Património Mineiro de Aljustrel” (“Aljustrel Mining Heritage Route”) which goes over some reference points from the mining activity in the city. The route is properly signed with informative panels and goes through the Vipasca Well, the grinding mill, the pruning of São João and the Ermita de Nossa Senhora do Castelo Shrine.
