The Museu Visigótico (Visigothic Museum) is set up in the old Igreja de Santo Amaro Church, close to the Beja Castle.
Some parts of the old Igreja de Santo Amaro Church date from the beginning of the 6th century, when it was a Visigothic temple. This is one of the oldest still-standing buildings in Portugal.
Inside, the original columns have fascinating engravings. Furthermore, the museum also exhibits a collection made up by Visigothic pieces which date between the 5th and 8th centuries, one of the most important collections from this period in the Iberian Peninsula.
