The Beja Regional Museum, also known as Rainha D. Leonor Museum, is set up in the Nossa Senhora da Conceição Convent, a Franciscan convent founded in 1459. In this convent took place a thrilling love story between a nun and a French soldier, according to the outrageous letters written, supposedly, by the nun Mariana Alcoforado.
This convent is a renowned romantic place, where the stark Gothic style mixes with Manueline fantasy.
Its Rococo chapel, with gilded wood from 17th and 18th centuries, stands out along with another chapel decorated with intricate marble.
The chapter house, in Arabic style, contrasts starkly with the rest of the building. It featuresa roof painted with ferns, 16th century tiles and a door with carvings.
The cloister has excellent tiles panels from the 16th and 17th centuries.
The exhibitions at the Regional Museum are mainly beautiful lamps, glass bottles, Roman steles and paintings from the 16th and 17th century.
