The Fortress of Sagres is an imposing fortress built in the 15th century by a man-made extension of natural rock used to defend Sagres from the permanent harassment of pirates.
This fortress was for several centuries the main point in this coastal defense system.
Currently, this fortress is considered a devotion place in all Portugal. The investment in navigation techniques, strategically promoted by D. Henrique in Sagres, inspired the best pilots, geographers, and astronomers of the time, teaching Fernão Magalhães, Vasco da Gama, and Christopher Columbus among many other.
Within its walls is the Igreja da Nossa Senhora de Graça Church (16th century), housing a baroque carving of São Vicente protecting a vessel, a cistern-tower, and a large 43-metres-in-diameter wind rose.
In its interior you will find the Museum of Portuguese Discoveries, an interactive museum focused on the Portuguese discoveries.
