Alter do Chão is a Portuguese town located just 12 kilometre south of the town of Crato, in Alto Alentejo, Portugal.
This town is clustered around a 14th century castle with battlemented towers standing above a central square, built by King D. Pedro. From the top of the keep, you get amazing panoramic views of the town and the olive fields that surround it.
To the north of the castle, in the square, you can find a 16th century marble fountain framed by elegant little columns with classic capitals sustaining a charming entablement.
A walk along the town will allow you to discover many other monumental fountains, as well as churches and baroque palaces, among them the one in Álamo, with a labyrinthic garden.
This is one of most important spots for the breeding of Lusitan horses. In the town there is a Cavalo Museum, with ethnographic and photographic exhibitions.
