Monforte is a portuguese municipality located 27 kilometres away from the city of Portalegre along the N18, in the Alto Alentejo region, Portugal.
The heart of the town is the Praça da República, decorated by orange trees and a fountain. The square is framed by the City Hall, several Baroque palaces, the Igreja da Orden Terceira Church (18th century), The Igreja Matriz Church with the Capela dos Ossos Chapel (18th century). This chapel is totally covered in bones and human skulls.
Outside the city walls it’s worth visiting the Casa do Prior (18th century), and the Igreja de Santa María Magdalena Church (15th century), nowadays City Museum.
In the exit to Viamonte, you will find several buildings such as the Capela do Senhor da Boa Morte (19th century), the Templo de São João Baptista Temple (18th c.), the Igreja da Conceição (17th-18th c.) and the Igreja do Calvário Church (18th c.). The latter has a Greek cross floorplan and a slender cupola.
Only five kilometres to the West, you can see a well-preserved Roman bridge in the Lusitan-Roman villa of Torre de Palma.
