Crato is a Portuguese villa located 23 kilometres to the east of the city of Portalegre, in Alto Alentejo, Portugal.
The heart of the city of the Praça do Municipio, where you can see the Varanda do Prior (16th c.), the Town Hall (18th c.), and the Sá Noriega palace (18th c.). Nearby, you can see the City Museum, installed in the Baroque palace of Rua do Arco.
If you walk along Rua José da Gama, you will find the Igreja da Misericórdia Church (18th c.) and the Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Conceção Church, from the 13th century, but reformed in the 18th. There, you can go along Rua Dr. Teixeira Guerra to reach the homonymous Manueline-Baroque palace, where two kings married: D. Manuel I with Dª. Leonor (1518), and D. João III with Dª. Catarina (1525).
Behind the Palace, stands the imposing castle, nowadays an excellent overlook. Only 1 kilometre to the north of Crato, you shouldn’t miss the Flora da Rosa Monastery, with a 14th century church, and converted into a Pousada hotel in 1995. Nearby, you can also see two dolmens: the one in Anta Grande do Tapadão, and the other in Anta do Crato.
