The Museu Municipal de Portalegre (Portalegre City Museum) was established in 1918 within the ideological framework of the I Republic by Dr. Laureano António Picão Sardinha.

Currently, the museum houses wealthy archives coming, mostly, from the old convents of Portalegre (Santa Clara and São Bernardo), as well as personal donations.
