Serra de São Mamede Natural Park is an ideal spot for hiking and joying some memorable days in touch with nature. In Serra, five hiking trails are signaled and feature shelters where you could stay. In fact, the natural park is a true island of lush vegetation in an arid and rocky region.
It’s height reaches 1,025 metres and tends to be crowned by snow during the winter.
The impervious nature of the soil preserves the humidity, fomenting the growth of a thick and varied vegetation, inusual in the region.
The fauna in the park is also rich, since it’s common to see Griffon Vultures, eagles, bats, deers, wild boars, otters, and batrachians.
In the historical centre, it’s worth visiting the Capela de Nossa Senhora da Penha (best accessed from Castelo de Vide), and the medieval town of Alegrete, accessed from Arronches by the Lourenço valley.
The road that climbs to the top goes through forests and offers perfect panoramic views of Portalegre and the neighbouring areas. From the top, you can see Southern Alentejo, the Serra de São Mamede range to the north and west, and the Spanish mountain ranges to the east.
From Marvão departs an interesting hiking trail of 7,5 km that leads to Portagem crossing Abegoa and Fonte Souto, following a medieval stone road.
