The Convent of Calvario in Évora was built in 1565 to host the nuns of Santa Clara. It was commissioned by the Infanta D. Maria of Portugal, who was daughter of the king D. Manuel I,
Here it stands out its single-naved church, sheathed by 18th century panels of tiles, and the rectangular, in simple lines two-floors cloister.
Its original architecture is preserved very well. Heavy in appearance, it was influenced by the directives of the Council of Trent. Its nuns have always been poor.
It is worth to mention here was locked up D. Isabel Juliana de Sousa Contunho, daughter of D. Vicente Roque José de Sousa Contuinho de Menezes Monteiro Paim. It was the Marquis of Pombal who made her a prisoner after her refusal to marry his son.
