The Praça do Giraldo Square is Évora’s main one. This place has witnessed several important events in the history of Portugal, such as the execution of Fernando, duke of Bragança, in 1483; the public burning of the Inquisition’s victims in the 16th century or the intense debate on the Agrarian reform during the 1970s.
Nowadays. this square is still the heart of the city. Its arcades house several shops, cafes and restaurants where different activities take place. It also has a 18th century marble fountain made by Afonso Alvares.
In the Southwest, narrow alleys make up the old Jewish quarter. Located in the Northwest is Rua 5 de Outubro, a street with wonderful low-balconied-houses that will take you to the Cathedral of Évora.
