The Castle of Viana do Alentejo is located around 31 kilometres in the South to Évora, in the region of the Alentejo, Portugal.
It is a pentagonal-shaped Gothic in style castle that was refurbished in the 5th century, when the battlements were strengthened. Its fortified walls have a watchtower in each one of its corners. The arcade is adorned with rustic capitals shaped like animals (turtle, lion,...).
There is a beautiful Mudejar-Manueline church inside it, crowned by conic bell towers and merlons. Its Manueline in style facade has a small column of Solomon that works as a mullion of the arches located among two candelabrum-shaped pillars. The small column holding the tympanum is adorned with flowers and a cross-medallion, with Portugal’s crest above it.
Its gable is made up by a twisted cord finishing as a pinnacle flanked by two armillary spheres.
The interior is adorned with 17th century tiles, located only at the base of the walls. The main chapel has a beautiful Christ on it.
Next to here you will find the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora D'Aires, that is also worth to visit.
